New Football Coach has Strong Ties to Oceanside High School Program

Coach David Rodriguez.jpgFor eight seasons, David Rodriguez served as an assistant on the coaching staff of legendary Oceanside High School football Coach John Carroll.  Today, the school announced that he has been named the successor to Carrol who, during his 26 years on the sidelines, built the OHS program into one of the most prolific in the state.

Rodriguez coached in Oceanside from 1995 through 2003. He reunites with OHS after spending the past six years as the head coach at Sahuarita High School, a campus just south of Tucson, Ariz., with an enrollment of about 900 students.

“My objective is to continue the course of excellence in the classroom, on the field, and in the lives of the student athletes at Oceanside High School,” said Rodriguez.

During his six years in the desert, Rodriguez led his Mustangs to a 36-9 record.  This past season he was named the 2014 Division IV Section II Coach of the Year.  He was also tabbed with Coach of the Year honors by the Arizona Daily Star.

His coaching record includes back-to-back league titles, two undefeated regular seasons, three playoff appearances and the distinction of leading his team to its first state semi-finals playoff appearance in the past 10 years.

Congrats MCJROTC Drill Team!

Drill.jpgOn Saturday, 31 January our Pirate MCJROTC participated along with 25 other high schools at the Orange Glen High School hosted drill meet.  We brought back eight trophies; tied for 1st overall with Clarke High School.  In addition, one of our cadets earned a medal for being the last cadet standing during a “tap out” where 60-70 kids stood in formation responding to drill commands from Marine Corps Drill Instructors (similar to musical chairs but with drill movements).  Cadet Ojeda was the last cadet standing.

Once again, your Pirate Drill Team did a superior job-our Students looked and acted like Marines.  Their performance clearly demonstrated Pride, Relationships, Achievement, Teamwork, and Excellence!

The trophies are on display in N43 if you would care to look at them, but the picture tells the story.

John Carroll To Retire as Head Coach

Coach Carroll.jpgCiting health issues that “prevent him from coaching at a high level,” longtime OHS football coach John Carroll has made the decision to step down from  the championship program he built and has led for the past 26 years.  Carroll and the district announced the decision Wednesday afternoon.

“My recovery from a brain injury suffered a year ago has not progressed to the point that I can operate in a full-time capacity as a teacher and coach to meet the standards that I have set for myself,” said Carroll, who still plans to teach at the school.  “It is with bittersweet emotions that I step down.”

Carroll took over the OHS program in 1989.  Since that time, he has become one of the most successful high school football coaches in state history.  Last month, OUSD named the school’s athletic facility after him.  The district will begin the search process to identify and hire the next coach of the Pirates.

“It’s hard to step down from doing something that I love, at a school that I love, with people that I love, in a community that I love.”  — Coach Carroll
