Scholarship Essay Tips

Applying for Scholarships

Scholarships are an important part of making your college career a success! Here are some tips on applying for scholarships. If you need any help, see Ms. Hernandez in the College & Career Center, Rm V-130.

TIPS:

GET ORGANIZED:  Keep a binder or at least a folder of all your applications.  Try to keep applications in order of when they are due and give yourself at least 5 extra days prior to the deadline Also email important documents to yourself so that you may be able to access them from anywhere.

RECYCLE:  Keep copies (hard & electronic) of ALL your essays, recommendations, transcripts, resume etc.  Chances are you will be able to use and reuse most of what you write.

Be Professional:  type or write neatly in blue or black ink. Capitalize and use correct grammar.  Create a professional email.  Do not leave any sections blank!  If it does not apply to you, write N/A or not applicable.  Otherwise always try to answer every question.

Be Compelling:  Yes you need to be an open book!  Tell a compelling story, for everything.  Be descriptive and explain everything!

Scholarship Scams: Beware!

Unfortunately, not all scholarship services and scholarship providers are out to help students.

  • Warning: Financial aid/scholarships should be a FREE process.
  • No sponsor can guarantee that you will win an award!

Scam artists will often look official, often ask for a credit card or bank account information and then drain your account or run up charges on your credit card. If in doubt, ask your counselor or see Ms. Hernandez in the Career Center!
